Job Type:
Database-Driven Catalog Web Site with CMS
About This Project:
This Web site for Avalon Travel offers a browsable catalog of the company’s publications. All content is database-driven and dynamically served. Book listings and information, excerpts, author features, photos, biographies, and videos are completely searchable through a dynamic, intuitive keyword search. Users can also browse by geographic region, author, title, or special collections, plus sort listings by publication date, alphabetically by title, alphabetically by author, and more.
Other site features include:
- Comprehensive Content Management System—a set of Web-based pages and forms that Avalon Travel staff can use to add new content to the site, edit existing content, upload images, change homepage features, and more—all without knowing any HTML or other code.
- Hierarchically organized geographic browse page allows users to start at large regions and drill down in to find listings for books that cover smaller territories within those regions.
- “Email This Page” function that allows users to send one another excerpts, videos, book listings, author profiles, and other pages with a direct link embedded in the email.
- Keep-it-simple search box: You don’t need to specify “search by title” or “ISBN” or “author” or anything else—just type in your search words and the site will figure out what to check them against.
- Automatic page reformatting for printing purposes: Any time a user prints a page from the site, all irrelvant Web links and other distracting information are dynamically stripped out. At the same time, extra “watermark” content—such as copyright notices and the Web address for the site—is dynamically dropped in and printed. The result is that any one holding the hard copy will have complete references for where the content originated and how to find it and explore it further on the Web.
